How to you play bluegrass fiddle to the tune The Fox?

Today's lesson has you covered. We will begin by learning the basic melody and then expanding into the back-up and a fancier break on the fiddle (violin), guitar and mandolin. Cello and bass parts will be added later this week.

The Lyrics (to sing along)

The Fox went out on a chilly night He prayed for the moon to give him light For he'd many a mile to go that night Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o He'd many a mile to go that night before he reached the town-o

He ran till he came to the farmer's pen The ducks and the geese were kept therein He said "a couple of you are gonna grease my chin, Before I leave this town " Said a couple of you are gonna grease my chin, before i leave this town-o

He grabbed the great goose by the neck And he threw a duck across his back And he didn't mind the quack quack And the legs all dangling down-o He didn't mind the quack quack And the legs all dangling down-o

The old grey woman jumped out of bed She ran to the window and popped out her head, Crying John, John, the great goose is gone And the fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o John, John, the great goose is gone and the fox is on the town-o

He ran till he came to his nice warm den And there were the little ones, eight, nine, ten Sayin' Daddy, Daddy, better go back again For it must be a mighty fine town-o, town-o, town-o Daddy, Daddy, go back again for it must be a mighty fine town-o

The fox and his wife, without any strife Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife They never had such a supper in their life And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o They never had such a supper in their life And the little ones chewed on the bones

HOW TO COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE (ADVANCED LESSON BELOW)

Today's tune challenge is The Fox. My favorite renditions are from Nickel Creek and the Petersen's. I suggest watching their videos for inspiration to get a basic feel for the tune. Listening to great musicians and bands helps you fall in 'love' with the music.

Get Started: Watch the INSPIRATION videos to get a feel for the song. You are ready to begin learning the main parts of the tune once you know the song by 'heart' ie. you can sing or hum along and remember the melody.

My favorite videos to watch are from the Petersen Family

I went live on YouTube to give a fiddle lesson on this tune, if you need more practice or help you can practice with the video (below)...
